Former Maryland Lt. Governor Michael Steele was just elected chairman of the RNC. Here are five facts about the new leader of the Republican party:
1. Steele compared stem cell research to Nazi experiments during the Holocaust.
2. Steele bused in homeless African Americans from Philadelphia to distribute literature in inner-city Baltimore that featured a “Sample Democratic Ballot” with votes for Steele and former Gov. Bob Ehrlich, along with photos of prominent black Democrats.
3. Steele once described that “R” next to his name as a “scarlet letter,” complaining that being a Republican was hurting his electoral chances.
4. Steele was endorsed by Mike Tyson during his run for Senate. When Tyson, who used to be married to Steele’s half sister, pleaded no contest to assault in Montgomery County in 1998, Steele was on hand to support him.
5. Steele defended former Gov. Bob Ehrlich’s decision to hold a $100,000 fundraiser at a country club that did not allow non-white members, saying that the club’s membership’s policies were “not an issue” because “I don’t play golf.”

I’m a big fan of Michael Steele. And by “big fan” I mean that I love to make fun of him.
One thing you may have forgotten which relates to item #2 on your list: during his unsuccessful run for the senate, he never identified himself as a Republican in his TV ads. Absolutely nowhere were the words “GOP” or “Republican” to be found.

Fun Fact #6
Michael Steele once claimed he had Oreo Cookies thrown at him during a debate (1), and has yet to retract the statement, even though the debate moderator said he saw no such thing happen.
Yep, that’s the GOP. No matter what color you are, it’s always the politics of race.

I can’t wait to see the MSM report Rush telling his radio audience the reason Steele got elected, cupping his hands over his microphone and announcing “BECAUSE HE’S BLACK”!
Rush on 30 Jan 2009 at 9:41 pm #
Cheap tokenism, nothing but a political stunt. I guess the rnc found what they think is their own “magic negro”. Another shallow pandering attempt, just like the ever so entertaining Ms. Palin. It’ll work for some goppers I imagine – they’re pretty shallow and are easily confused by image over substance. (ie see GW Bush)
We’re not laughing WITH you, we’re laughing AT you.

Based on the items in the list above, Michael Steele fits the republican profile perfectly. He’s just what is needed: a new roll of toilet paper to use and discard.
If he thinks he’s going to unite the party, just look at the number of rounds of votes that were held before he was elected and notice that he didn’t get an overwhelming number of votes. He was the lesser of 4 evils.
And if the GOP thinks having Steele as the new head of the RNC will attract minorities to the party, they need to think again because minorities have extensive experience in wading through bull$h!t.*

Your claim under #1 is being slippery with words. Steele made a different statement, and you are losing the distinction to hype your claim. He said something like that, but not that. Distinctions matter, especially when quoting political opponents.

Bah bah, Steele’s inexperienced laments the Barack Obama crowd. Pot, kettle, anyone?
Of course he didn’t put a big R on his campaign signs…it is MD for crying out loud! The state is the 6th bluest state in the union according to the Baltimore Sun. And since when should people vote on party line? Wasn’t it Savior Obama saying to set aside partisan politics.
Steele is someone who strives regardless of the situation he finds himself in. He’ll rise through the ashes of the naysayers and succeed when others say it isnt possible.

While I wish Michael Steele good luck in his new position, I see his selection as a ploy for the GOP to make Blacks and other minorities feel like the party is suddenly pro minorities and anti racists.
Please color me “UNIMPRESSED”.
Until the party adopts SUBSTANTIVE steps rather SYMBOLIC ones to address its INHERENT problems, it might as well be whistling DIXIE! OsiSpeaks[dot]com

Steele’s election reminds me of the Republicans sending Alan Keyes out to Illinois to run against Obama for the senate seat. The GOP is trying to counter President Obama with Steele. Now, the GOP will be able to continue their bigoted ideology and hide behind Michael Steele. I know the Red Southern states are excited about his selection. Steele does not play golf, but he should team up with the runner up (Dawson). Dawson can try to get Steele golf lessons at his former country club. In short, Steele will be as successful as the RNC Chair as Keyes was running for the Illinois senate seat.

For those of you who keep going back to the past for excuses to apply in the present… do not !
Only what we are going through now matters – hence why we should unify for the greater good… instead of opposing everything that goes just to score ‘politically’
Republicans should understand a simple principel:
“Americans want action now , not tomorrow not yesterday NOW ” take your petty political views to your own sad gatherings …
IF GOP does not approve of the President’s stimulus , they should stand firm and not accept a single cent from it – this will show the rest of us that they are serious – if they are prepared to do that …. then we will know that they can put their mouth where their money is…
Barry on 02 Feb 2009 at 4:31 am #
1. GOP chose MS so that they could attack our brilliant President’s policies without being regarden a ‘racist’
2. Steel lacks class and could never compare with the likes of our President Obama … what could they be thinking ? Steel was beligerant during the Primaries, fancy wanting someone like that as Chairman ? it tells you all about the GOP
3. The RCS leadership is steel ( get it ? ) wanting … they do not trust each other that is why they have to make these really ‘odd’ decisions !
4. God forbid Republicans could actually do something to help the community – they are greedy, petty, loud, uneducated, insensitive and in general full of BS

[...] – The RNC has a new chair: Michael Steele. In a move more politically shameless than the selection of Sarah Palin for Vice President, the Republican National Committee selected one of its only high-ranking minority members for its highest leadership position. He immediately (and predictably) called for increasing the diversity of the Republican Party…and then degenerated into the usual off-putting conservative rhetoric. Here are some fun facts about Steele (credited to Judd Legum): [...]

I am appalled by so many of your comments. Do you think that you are free from responsibility to yourself, your children and your country when you enter comments on a blog?
Many of you may be college educated, even have masters or law degrees. But the direction of this country will not change until all of you start thinking, speaking and blogging like adults. I teach my children to be open minded and speak positively to be successful in life. Negativity breeds contempt. So grow up, act like adults, and share constructive comments that bring this country together, rather than tearing every single person apart from head to toe. You should be embarrassed by the comments you continually make, and are cowards to give your innermost thoughts in a blog, rather than trying to make this country better with positive feedback.
